Post Modern: a recreation of a Rudy Perez Class circa 2000/2001

  • SOMA 418 418 Central Ave SE Albuquerque, NM, 87102 (map)

Rudy was among the founders of the Post Modern dance style coming out of the Judson Church Theater in New York in the 1960s. Scot was a Teaching assistant for Rudy in the early 2000's working at Los Angeles High School for the Arts, USC, and with his Rudy Perez Project company in Los Angeles.

This class is a compilation of the warm up and technique sequences Rudy was constantly evolving focusing on strength, precision, and use of space. Class focuses on the shapes we make with our bodies, as well as the shapes we carve through space, and the relationship we have to that space and with each other as we move. Be prepared for floor work as well as standing movement. Class does include a full warm up and cross-the-floor movement. Style and sensibilities are influenced by Merce Cunningham and Martha Graham, both of whom Rudy studied with directly in his youth, paired with the idea of pedestrian movement as performance.

In addition to his work with Rudy Perez, Scot worked with Los Angeles based companies Keshet Chaim, Collage Dance Theater (now Heidi Duckler Dance), B.E. Productions, Masterpiece Dance Theater, Michael Mizerany Dance, Nancy Evans Dance Theater, among others, and taught all ages for Masterpiece Dance Theater ballet school for 10 years.

Socks recommended for warm up/ floor work; barefoot for the remainder of class.
